STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON TEACHER AND PRINCIPAL EVALUATION SYSTEMS

“This is a clear win for students that will benefit generations of New York City public school children.  Commissioner King has sided with our children on nearly every major point of disagreement we had with the UFT’s leadership, while also rejecting the UFT’s long-held demand for a sunset provision.  Our refusal to accept a sunset provision was a primary reason why talks with the UFT broke down in January, and this ruling validates our decision to hold firm.   The model Commissioner King adopted closely resembles the one we have put in place on a pilot basis at 200 of our schools.  It will put students first, further empower our principals, and solidify our accountability measures.  Good teachers will become better ones and ineffective teachers can be removed from the classroom.  While we are still reviewing the decision, and do not support every aspect of it, I applaud Commissioner King for putting our students first and creating a system that will allow our schools to continue improving.  We’ve been working for more than a decade to increase accountability in our schools so that we can help more students succeed – and the UFT has fought us nearly every step of the way.  Today marks a major milestone in our reform efforts and it will benefit students for generations to come.  I want to commend Chancellor Walcott and his team for their hard work on this issue – their perseverance and determination to do right by our kids has really paid off.”
