STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON GOVERNOR CUOMO SIGNING LEGISLATION TO ENHANCE CRIMINAL PENALTIES FOR ASSAULT ON A SOCIAL SERVICES EMPLOYEE

“Governor Cuomo has signed an important piece of legislation that will increase the penalties for assaulting a social service employee. This law will provide additional protection to front line staff at the Administration for Children Services, Human Resources Administration and Department of Homeless Services, who work tirelessly to provide care and assistance to those in need. This legislation recognizes their commitment by treating an assault on one of these dedicated men or women the same way we treat an assault on a police officer, firefighter or school employee. We thank Senators Martin Golden and Diane Savino for sponsoring the bill in the Senate and Assemblymen Peter Rivera and Joe Lentol for their support.”
