STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON JOINT NYPD AND FBI ARRESTS OF CURRENT AND FORMER NYPD OFFICERS ON ILLEGAL TRAFFICKING CHARGES

“If the charges against the police officers arrested this morning prove true, it would be a disgraceful and deplorable betrayal of the public trust. Our City has lost too many people – and too many police officers – to criminals who buy guns illegally, including Detectives James Nemorin and Rodney Andrews, who were killed trying to take illegal guns off the street in 2003. Our Administration is taking every possible step to crack down on illegal guns, and continue making the safest big city in the country even safer.

“The NYPD is the finest police department in the world, and theses arrests do nothing to diminish the selfless commitment of the 35,000 men and women who put on a uniform every day, and who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. Because of their dedication and hard work, thousands of guns have been taken off the streets, and thousands of lives have been saved. Their hard work also helped break this case, and I want to commend Commissioner Kelly and the NYPD’s Office of Internal Affairs for working with the FBI to make these arrests.

“The fact that these were inoperable guns does not change the fact, if the charges prove true, that the officers violated their sacred oath. We will continue doing everything possible to take illegal guns off the street – and to bring justice to anyone who seeks to sell or carry guns illegally.”
