STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON APPOINTMENT OF RAMANATHAN RAJU, MD AS CEO OF COOK COUNTY HEALTH SYSTEM

"The departure of New York City’s Health and Hospitals Corporation Chief Operating Officer Dr. Ramanathan Raju is a real loss to New York City’s public hospitals. But we can take a small amount of comfort in knowing that when elected officials ranging from President Barack Obama to Governor Chris Christie – and now Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle  – search the country for the most innovative and transformative leaders working in any government, they seem to find them in New York City more often than any other single place."

STATEMENT BY ALAN D. AVILES, PRESIDENT, NEW YORK CITY HEALTH AND HOSPITALS CORPORATION

"Chicago has made a great choice in appointing Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) Chief Operating Officer Ramanathan Raju as the new CEO of their public hospital system. As HHC's COO for the last two years, and its Chief Medical Officer for the previous three years, Dr. Raju has been an exceptionally effective leader and an invaluable colleague. His extensive operational knowledge, business strategy acumen, collaborative management style and deep commitment to the public hospital mission enabled Dr. Raju to play a central role in our efforts to raise the quality of our care while restructuring our system's operations for greater efficiency.  He will be sorely missed by the entire HHC family.  I am personally grateful to Dr. Raju for all that he has contributed and join with his many admirers in wishing him much success as he takes on the challenges of running Chicago's public hospital system at a critical time."
