STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON TRAGIC BUS ACCIDENT ON NEW ENGLAND THRUWAY

“This morning, a bus carrying 32 people from Connecticut to Chinatown overturned on the New England Thruway on the Westchester-Bronx border. The accident was horrific. Thirteen people are dead and others are badly hurt. The injured victims are being treated at Jacobi Medical Center and St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx.

“Our – and the entire city’s – prayers, thoughts and sympathies are with the victims, and their families and loved ones. City agencies, including the Community Assistance Unit, Human Resources Administration, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and Office of Emergency Management have set up a Family Assistance Center to provide family members with information regarding their loved ones. Many of the victims are Chinese, and we have brought in translators to help assist the families. The Center will have up-to-date information regarding the condition and location of all of the individuals on the bus. Family members and others impacted by this accident should call 311 to get information about assistance and services. The New York State Police is leading the investigation into the accident’s circumstances, with the NYPD and FDNY assisting in making rescues and providing other support. Our prayers and sympathies are with the victims of this terrible tragedy and their family and friends.”
