STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE DEATH OF NICHOLAS A. LAPORTE, JR., FORMER VICE CHAIRMAN OF THE NEW YORK CITY CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION

“Nicholas A. La Porte, Jr., former Vice Chairman of the Civil Service Commission was a dedicated public official who loved our City and served it well. Nick was a true New Yorker, and even lived in four of our five boroughs. He was born in the Bronx, raised in Brooklyn, later lived on Staten Island and then moved to Manhattan where he lived when he passed away, after his long battle with cancer.

“Early in his early career, Nick was First Deputy Director of the City Department of Personnel, where he was responsible for administration planning and the daily operations of the agency. Later he served as the director of the infrastructure division at the City Council, working on solid waste management and rent regulation.  He later was named Executive Director of the Associated Builders and Owners of Greater New York, and I had the honor to appoint him as Vice Chairman of the Civil Service Commission, where he continued to serve until his recent retirement.

“Nick inherited his love for government from his late father, who served our City as a member of the City Council and as Deputy Borough President of Staten Island. My sympathy goes to Nick’s family, his son Matthew, his daughter-in-law Anna and his granddaughter, Ava. He will be missed.”
