STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON NEW YORK CITY'S FALLING UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

“For the seventh straight month, New York City’s unemployment rate has dropped and now sits once again below the nationwide rate. New York continues to weather the national recession better than most cities, but we know too many New Yorkers continue to struggle to make ends meet.  We have a long way to go to fully restore our economic health, but clearly we are moving in the right direction.  By continuing to make smart investments that help create jobs today and over the long run, we will emerge from these difficult times stronger than ever.

“Chief among our strengths that are driving New York City’s recovery is the talent of our workforce, and that is undoubtedly one of the many factors that just led Foreign Policy Magazine and A.T. Kearney to rank New York City at the top of their 2010 Global Cities Index. The index measures how much sway a city has over what happens beyond its own borders, focusing on factors such as human capital, business activity, policy leadership, and culture. As a city that prides itself on welcoming the best and brightest from across the globe to do business here, and on encouraging innovative new ideas in every field, this recognition affirms New York City’s leading role in shaping the future.

“We are doing everything we can to keep making New York the most dynamic and pioneering place in the world – and the best city in which to live, work and visit. Whether it’s ensuring that our neighborhoods are safe and vibrant or transforming our public schools, we are making our city an even stronger magnet for talent.”
