MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND POLICE COMMISSIONER KELLY SWEAR IN NEW CLASS OF 1,249 NYPD RECRUITS

Budget Restoration Enables Largest Hire of Police Officers Since 2008

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today swore in a new class of 1,249 New York City Police Department recruits. The recruits begin formal Police Academy training this week. This is the first large class to enter the Police Academy since the beginning of the national recession. The large hire was made possible by the Fiscal Year 2011 budget that funded officer positions that were to be lost due to attrition. The ceremony took place at the York College Performing Arts Center.

"In a budget that was full of tough choices, we made a decision to put scarce taxpayer dollars towards keeping our city safe by including funding for nearly 900 police officer positions," said Mayor Bloomberg. "We continue to put public safety first, and I want to welcome all the new recruits to an organization that has continued to drive crime down through two national recessions, while keeping us safe from the threats arising halfway around the globe."

"Today you join a team that has surpassed all expectations - driving crime down to record lows, defending against terrorism, and forging cooperative relationships with the people we serve," Commissioner Kelly said. "The members of this class are in a great position to build on these successes, because some of you were police cadets or traffic enforcement agents who have seen the workings of the Police Department up close. Most of you live in New York City, and while your knowledge of the five boroughs gives you a great start in serving its people, that knowledge will grow exponentially during your time in the Police Department."

Ninety-nine of the recruits have prepared for their careers by serving in the Police Cadet Corps; 79 have military experience, 63 of whom served in Iraq or Afghanistan. Three-hundred and twenty-four (26%) hold bachelor's degrees. The class will graduate in December. Approximately 58% of the recruits reside in New York City.

The gender and racial breakdown of the recruits sworn-in is:

Male: 84%
Female: 16% White: 55.1%
Hispanic: 25.6%
