STATEMENT OF MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON CITY COUNCIL LAND USE REVIEW APPROVAL FOR NEW POLICE ACADEMY

"Today's 47-to-2 land use vote by the City Council clears the way for the City to move forward on constructing a 21st century Police Academy to train the next generation of New York's Finest. Because a construction contract has already been awarded and registered, we can now break ground on the new building.

"The current Police Academy in Manhattan is over 40-years old and was built for a Department half the size of the current one. The new site will allow for a larger, state-of-the-art academy that will consolidate in one campus the facilities for civilians, recruits and active police officers which are currently spread out across the City.

"I would like to thank Borough President Helen Marshall and Queens Community Board 7, which unanimously approved the project. I would also like to thank the Council, particularly the members of the Land Use Committee and the members of the Subcommittee on Landmarks, Public Siting, and Maritime Uses, who voted to approve this important project."
