MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION TO REQUIRE THE USE OF ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL FUEL IN GENERATORS AT STREET EVENTS AND FILM SHOOTS

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The fifth bill before me is Introductory Number 684-A, sponsored by Council Members Gerson, Fidler, James, Koppell, Nelson, Sanders, Liu, Brewer, Arroyo, White, Garodnick, Eugene, Gennaro and Weprin.  Introductory Number 684-A requires the use of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel in generators used at street events and on film shoots throughout our City.

"With more than 300 street events and more than 27,000 film shoot days taking place throughout the five boroughs last year alone, these activities don't just bring to our City a tremendous amount of revenue - they also add a great deal of vitality, diversity, and culture to New York life.  This bill seeks to minimize the environmental impact of street fairs and film shoots by requiring the use of fuel containing a sulfur content of no more than 15 parts per million in generators that power these activities.

"I would like to thank Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Steven Lawitts, Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting Commissioner Katherine Oliver, Citywide Event Coordination and Management Executive Director Evan Korn, and all of their staff for their work on this bill.  I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation."
