STATEMENT FROM MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEY ROBERT M. MORGENTHAU'S DECISION TO NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION

“Robert Morgenthau has been a superb District Attorney, and few people have served the City longer or more ably.  Over the past four decades, he has become a New York institution, and he has set the standard for district attorneys across the nation.  While he has earned much deserved acclaim for his success in attacking white collar crime, he deserves equal praise for his pioneering work cracking down on sexual predators.  His determination to make the most of DNA evidence helped produce one of the City’s most innovative and important partnerships: the John Doe Indictment Project, which to date has allowed us to indict 115 rapists and sexual predators.

“We also have Bob to thank for inspiring so many talented young attorneys to devote their careers to public service.  Our Administration has benefited from more than our share of Morgenthau alumni, and they have continued to make the City a better place to live and work.

“If there’s anyone who’s earned a retirement, it’s Bob Morgenthau.  But knowing him as I do, I am certain that he will continue to find ways to give back to the city he loves, whether through his long-time support of the Police Athletic League or any number of other charitable activities he has long supported.  On behalf of the city he has served so well for so long, it’s my honor to thank and congratulate District Attorney Morgenthau, and wish him all the best in the future.”
