STATEMENT BY MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON THE RETIREMENT OF ARCHBISHOP EDWARD CARDINAL EGAN AND THE APPOINTMENT OF ARCHBISHOP TIMOTHY DOLAN TO THE ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW YORK

"For the past nine years, Edward Cardinal Egan has led the Archdiocese of New York with great skill and compassion, and I am very grateful for his personal friendship. I want to congratulate him for his exemplary record of service, and I look forward to continuing to work with him during what I am sure will be an active retirement.

"I also want to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to our new Archbishop, Timothy Dolan. Archbishop Dolan has earned a reputation as a dynamic, energetic, and ecumenical leader, as well as a great champion of Catholic education. Así como Cardenal Egan, el Arzobispo Dolan habla varios idiomas y podrá traer su mensaje a la comunidad hispana de nuestra ciudad en español. Le ofrecemos nuestra más sincera bienvenida a nuestro nuevo arzobispo.

"The Archdiocese of New York and the City of New York are partners in so many areas, and I look forward to working with Archbishop Dolan to continue making New York City a place where families of all faiths work together toward common goals and shared dreams."
