MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION ALLOWING PARKING AT MISSING OR BROKEN PARKING METERS UP TO THE MAXIMUM TIME PERMITTED IN THAT PARKING METER ZONE

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The final bill before me today is Introductory Number 812-A, sponsored by Council Members Felder, Avella, Brewer, Comrie, Fidler, Gentile, Jackson, Mealy, Nelson, Palma, Recchia, Stewart, Weprin, Gerson, Monserrate, Vallone, Dilan, James, White, Lappin, Reyna, Liu, Eugene, Garodnick and Sears.

"Currently, drivers can park in parking spots with broken or missing meters for up to one hour. Introductory Number 812-A brings parking at a broken or missing meter more in line with regulations similar to that particular parking zone. It allows a person to park at a missing or broken parking meter, or on a block with missing or broken muni-meters, for the maximum allowable time otherwise lawfully permitted at that meter. Of course, I still would encourage people to call 3-1-1 in the event that they discover broken or missing meters or muni-meters.

"While regulating parking is necessary, it should not be overly confusing or burdensome. Introductory Number 812-A goes a long way towards achieving that objective.

"I would like to thank Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and her staff for their work on this bill. I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation."
