STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION’S ORDER ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY

"The Public Service Commission's new order on energy efficiency is a big step forward in our efforts to implement energy efficiency programs that will stabilize energy costs and combat global climate change. The order will double the funding for energy efficiency programs across the State and encourage utilities to provide their own energy efficiency programs. PlaNYC calls for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in New York City 30 percent by 2030, and meeting that goal will require the continued support of organizations like the Public Service Commission.

"At the same time, as the Commission acknowledged in its order, the new slate of energy efficiency programs doesn't go far enough. Additional programs will be needed to meet both the State's and the City's goals. We look forward to working with the utilities and the State's energy efficiency authority (known as NYSERDA) on the development of its efficiency programs. This will help achieve the numerous priorities identified in PlaNYC, such as funding CFL installation programs, existing building retrofit projects, as well as market and workforce development."
