STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON DECISION IN GUN DEALER LAWSUIT

“Today’s ruling in Brooklyn federal court by the Hon. Jack Weinstein is a significant victory in the City’s campaign against illegal guns. Today’s decision affirms that New York’s Courts do indeed have jurisdiction to hear a lawsuit against out of state gun dealers whose guns most often end up in the hands of criminals.  And it shows that cities can hold those who cause harm to innocent people and the police who protect us accountable. I am particularly pleased that the judge has set a trial date of January 7th, so we can prove that following common sense sales practices that comply with federal law – and that don’t interfere with anyone’s Constitutional rights – can make New Yorkers safer. I applaud the judge’s ruling, and I thank my Criminal Justice Coordinator, John Feinblatt, and Corporation Counsel Michael Cardozo, for their hard work on this case, as well as the law firm of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, for its invaluable pro bono legal assistance.”
