STATEMENT FROM MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON COURT OF APPEALS RULING ON THE CAMPAIGN FOR FISCAL EQUITY

"Over the last five years, New York City has improved educational outcomes, increased the amount of money spent in the classrooms, and introduced accountability into our schools.  Our teachers have earned historic pay increases, and we have created a $13 billion capital construction program that we are using to build new schools across the City.  I am very gratified that the State's highest court has recognized all of the progress we have achieved and agreed with the City's argument that our schools don't need new State oversight and management.

"New York City has already increased the amount we spend for schools by $3.5 billion a year, and New York State - of which the City is a large part - has increased contributions to City schools by an additional $1.5 billion a year.  We now look forward to receiving additional funds from the State, which we will spend as carefully as we have spent our own taxpayer dollars to improve the education of each of our students."
