MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION INCREASING REPORTING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The next two bills before me today require the Department of Education to report on several indicators regarding City schools.

"The first bill, Introductory Number 550-A, is sponsored by Council Members Martinez, Moskowitz, Barron, Brewer, Comrie, Dilan, Fidler, Gennaro, Gentile, Gerson, Gonzalez, Jennings, Koppell, Liu, Monserrate, Nelson, Palma, Quinn, Recchia, Sanders, Stewart, Weprin, deBlasio and the Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.  This bill requires the Department of Education to report on the number of temporary classrooms in the City public schools.

"The next bill, Introductory Number 619-A, is sponsored by Council Members Moskowitz, Baez, Brewer, Fidler, Foster, Gennaro, Gerson, James, Koppell, Liu, Martinez, Nelson, Palma, Sanders, Sears, Vann, Weprin, deBlasio, Jackson, Seabrook, Addabbo, Comrie and the Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.  This bill requires the Department of Education to report average class size in each City school.

"Intro's 550-A and 619-A will give parents the useful information they need to make informed decisions about their children's education. I would like to thank the Department of Education and the City Council for their work on this bill."
