MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION CREATING NO WAKE ZONE ON HARLEM RIVER

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The next bill before me is Introductory Number 495-A, sponsored by Council Members Martinez, Barron, Comrie, Jennings, Palma, Seabrook, Stewart, Yassky, Koppell, Brewer, Sears, Jackson and Liu. This legislation establishes a no-wake area within the Harlem River, requires the distribution of education material about wake reduction and establishes a temporary Citywide Boater Safety and Wake Reduction Task Force.

"Large wakes caused by watercraft pose a danger to boaters, the shoreline and waterfront recreational facilities. This bill was named in honor of Jim Runsdorf. Jim was an avid rower who was recently involved in a terrible accident along the Harlem River and died from his injuries. I am aware that Mr. Runsdorf's family is with us today and I would like to express my heartfelt condolences for their loss.

"I would like to thank the Police DepartmentParks DepartmentDepartment of Transportation and the City Council for their work on this bill."
