STATEMENT FROM MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON CREATION OF MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE SAFETY TASK FORCE

“Although we are grateful that those affected by the accident at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade were not seriously injured, our good fortune should not stop us from determining what went wrong and how similar incidents can be prevented in the future. To that end, I am appointing a task force to investigate the incident to determine if proper procedures were followed. The task force will work with Macy’s and produce a report which will recommend possible changes in procedures if any are determined to be necessary. I have asked Corporation Counsel Michael Cardozo and Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Bruno to co-chair the task force, which will consist of representatives of the Law Department, OEM, the Department of Transportation, the Police Department and the Department of Parks & Recreation. The parade is a wonderful New York tradition and we want to make sure it continues safely and joyously in the years to come.”
