During his nearly four decade tenure as Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, he broke down religious barriers and embraced the causes of justice and equality. Archbishop Iakovos was the first Orthodox leader to meet with a Pope in 350 years; he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama and was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter.  We have lost a powerful voice for peace and religious tolerance."
