MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG CONGRATULATES NYC TV ON WINNING EIGHT NEW YORK EMMY AWARDS

NYC TV Ties With WCBS-TV and WPIX-TV; Comes In Second After WNBC-TV

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today congratulated NYC TV, the official TV network of the City of New York, on winning eight New York Emmy Awards.  NYC TV had been nominated for thirteen New York Emmys, local television's most coveted peer-recognition award.  Over the two previous years, NYC TV was nominated for nine New York Emmy Awards and won two.  The New York Emmy Awards will be broadcast on NYC TV's Channel 25 on Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at 8:00 PM in a three-hour special presentation.  The awards ceremony took place at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel last night.

"Today, all New Yorkers can take pride in the achievements of NYC TV," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Not even two years old, the network has already established itself as a valuable resource in our efforts to attract regional tourists, support local businesses, and provide New Yorkers with valuable information about our great city. The eight New York Emmy awards show that NYC TV is also quickly gaining recognition from its peers in the industry as well."

NYC TV won the following New York Emmy Awards:

  • Promotional Announcement Station Promo:  NYC TV Spring Promo - Roland Le Breton, Producer.
  • Public Service Announcements: Typecasting - Will Morrison, Producer; Miguel Fernandez, Copywriter.
  • Camera Documentary:  Blueprint | NYC - Stephen Vigilante, Camera Person.
  • Editor Documentary:  Blueprint | NYC - Walter Garaicoa, Editor.
  • Graphics: Roland Le Breton Composite - Roland Le Breton, Designer.
  • Art Direction/Scene and Set Design: City Drive Live Virtual Studio - Roland Le Breton, Art Director.
  • Lighting: Blueprint | NYC Interview Lighting Composite - Wiener Milien, Designer.
  • Off Camera Achievement: Blueprint | NYC Photography Composite - Roland Le Breton, Photographer.

"NYC TV's mission is to make New York City - both government and the City itself - more accessible," said Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications Commissioner Gino Menchini.  "Winning eight New York Emmy awards clearly demonstrates that NYC TV is producing high quality programming that both critics and New Yorkers enjoy and appreciate."

"Everyone at NYC TV is smiling today," said Arick Wierson, the General Manager for NYC TV.  "The entire NYC TV organization worked extremely hard all year long and to be recognized by your peers is just tremendous.  NYC TV's localized content is not only drawing more viewers, but also the praise of our peers."

"As we approach our third full year of operation, it's hard to believe we've come so far so fast," said Seth Unger, Creative Director at NYC TV. "These Emmy awards, as well as the nominations - the most we've ever received - recognize individuals; but it's NYC TV's teamwork that has gotten us to where we are."

NYC TV began to produce NYC-themed original programming in 2002.  The content was designed to inform, entertain and showcase all that's great about New York City - neighborhoods, arts, culture, history and diverse communities.    The programs have already had a positive impact on those featured.  For example, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island credits NYC TV with bringing visitors from outside Staten Island to the Center and many of the local up-and-coming music artists featured on New York Noise credit the show with generating record sales.  Prior to NYC TV, the City's TV station would only show government hearings and meetings, often months after they actually occurred, with no programming schedule for viewers.

Due to the success of NYC TV's cable operation, Mayor Bloomberg placed the City's broadcast TV and radio station - WNYE-TV and WNYE-FM - under the management of NYC TV.  Since that change in January, NYC TV's Emmy award winning content can now be seen by over 7 million homes in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

NYC TV oversees one broadcast TV station (WNYE-TV, channel 25), one broadcast radio station (WNYE 91.5 FM) and five cable channels (71, 73, 74, 75, and 93).  Over the past two years, NYC TV has seen its awareness level increase 34.5% and its viewership increase by 46.4%, as measured by a Nielsen Media Research study.  WNYE-TV and WNYE-FM reach over 7 million homes in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.  NYC TV's five cable channels currently reach 1.8 million cable subscribers in New York City.
