MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION MODERNIZING THE ELECTRICAL CODE

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The next bill before me is Introductory Number 407, sponsored at the request of our Administration by Council Members Provenzano, Comrie, Nelson, Reed, Seabrook, Stewart and Weprin.  This bill amends the City's electrical code to provide for the use of certain materials during building construction.

"In 2001, the City Council enacted Local Law 64 adopting the National Electrical Code as the City's electrical code.  Local Law 64 required a mandatory periodic revision of the electrical code's technical provisions, thereby ensuring the code remains current and reflects the latest advances in technology.

"Introductory Number 407 is an extension of this review process, permitting the use of rigid non-metallic conduit in certain circumstances. While it was always City policy to allow for the use of this material, this decision demonstrates the Department of Buildings'
consensus-building approach.  This bill is yet another example of how this Administration is working to build the foundation for a safer and more economically viable City.

"I would like to thank Council Member Provenzano and Commissioner Lancaster for their leadership, the members of the electrical code advisory committees for their assistance, and the rest of the Department of Buildings' NYC Model Code Program staff for their work on this legislation."
