STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON DEFEAT OF GUN MANUFACTURERS IMMUNITY BILL

“I am extremely relieved that the Senate has rejected a terrible bill that would have shielded irresponsible gun manufacturers, wholesalers, dealers and trade associations from civil liability any time they recklessly or negligently supplied guns to criminals.  As I have argued, gun manufacturers should be held liable for their negligence, just like every other industry. It would be have been outrageous to grant them immunity when firearms kill 7,000 people in this country every year.  I would like to thank my fellow Mayors who joined together to lobby Senators from across the aisle and across the country to stop this insane bill from being passed.”
