MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG AND NYC2012 WELCOME  THE UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEE TO NEW YORK CITY

USOC Outlines Next Steps On The Road To The 2012 Summer Games

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today welcomed the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to City Hall, marking their first visit to New York City since New York was chosen as the United States Candidate City for the 2012 Olympic Games on Saturday in Colorado Springs. During the visit, USOC President Marty Mankamyer detailed the international phase of the process, which culminates in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) making its final decision in the Summer of 2005. USOC Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Ward also congratulated New York City on its designation as the US Candidate City.

“Our selection as the US Candidate City is a tribute to the enormous support the bid has received from all New Yorkers and the tireless efforts of the thousands who have worked to make our Olympic vision into a reality,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Bringing the Olympic Games to the ‘World’s Second Home’ would celebrate our unequalled diversity, our resilience, and the spirit of our great City, a place where Olympians from every nation would feel welcome. On behalf of all New Yorkers and NYC2012, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the members of the United States Olympic Committee for this honor – we won’t let you down.”

“Today marks the beginning of a three-year-long process in which New York City will face intense competition from some of the world’s greatest cities for the honor of hosting the 2012 Olympic Games,” said Deputy Mayor for Economic Development & Rebuilding Daniel Doctoroff.   “We’re taking nothing for granted and with the USOC’s support, we will vigorously promote the Big Apple’s bid. Fully consistent with International Olympic Committee guidelines, we will reach out to leaders, opinion makers, and media in every IOC nation leading up to the final vote in 2005 to make the case that no other city can host an Olympics like New York City can.”

“We are enormously honored to have been selected as the U.S. Candidate City,” said NYC2012 Executive Director Jay Kriegel. “We look forward with great excitement to a close and productive partnership with the USOC to bring the Games back to American soil in 2012.”
