MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG’S STATEMENT REGARDING DECISION BY UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEE

“On behalf of the City of all New Yorkers and NYC2012, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the members of the United States Olympic Committee for this honor. New York embodies the Olympic spirit – since its beginning, our City, like the Olympics, has opened its doors to the world. New Yorkers are tough, competitive, and share the innate desire of every Olympian to prove that they are the best.  I cannot think of a better City that symbolizes the Olympic movement and we are thrilled that the United States Olympic Committee agrees.

“The city of San Francisco made a tremendous bid.   It’s unfortunate that this is a competition where someone had to come in second.  But from here on out, we know we can count on San Francisco to help bring the games back to America in 2012.  We all recognize that this is just the beginning of a three-year-long process. New York City will face intense competition from the world’s greatest cities for the honor of hosting the 2012 summer games. We’re taking nothing for granted. NYC2012 will partner with the USOC to vigorously promote the Big Apple’s bid. Fully consistent with International Olympic Committee guidelines, we will reach out to leaders, opinion makers, and media in every IOC nation leading up to the final vote in 2005.

“To everyone who worked on New York City’s bid—especially Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff, NYC2012 Executive Director Jay Kriegel, and his staff – thank you.  You have shown the United States Olympic Committee that New York City has what it takes to put on the best Olympic Games in history.”
