MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG RECEIVES 2002 GLOBAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

Honored by the United Nations Association of the United States of America and the Business Council for the United Nations

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today received the 2002 Global Leadership Award from the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) and the Business Council for the United Nations (BCUN) at a ceremony held at the Sheraton New York Hotel. This award is given to recognize outstanding leadership by an individual or organization in furthering the purposes and principles underpinning the United Nations, as inscribed in its charter. Mayor Bloomberg was recognized for education reform and for his commitment to good relations between New York City and the United Nations. The Mayor has made education a top priority in New York, the International Host City of the United Nations.

"It is an honor for me to receive this award from the United Nations Association of the United States of America and the Business Council for the United Nations," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Education is the single greatest force for international peace and progress. And by providing a top-rate education for our City's children today, we are paving the way for them to become the leaders of the world tomorrow."

Muhammad Ali, world-renowned boxer and United Nations Messenger of Peace, was also honored with the 2002 Global Leadership Award for his vigorous advocacy on behalf of tolerance and understanding, and for his dedication to making the world a better place for children and young people. Sir Paul and Lady Heather Mills McCartney were the honorees for UNA-USA's first Global Humanitarian Action Award for bringing the world's attention to the problem of landmines through their support of UNA-USA's Adopt-A-Landmine Campaign.

The UNA-USA is the country's largest grassroots foreign policy organization and the leading center of policy research on the United Nations. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan group designed to educate Americans about critical issues addressed by the U.N. The UNA-USA sponsors programs and events designed to encourage participation in global issues. Through its Business Council for the United Nations division, the UNA-USA works to promote increased cooperation between the U.N. and the business community.
