September 11th
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced the routes that the Bagpipe
and Drum Procession will take as they journey to the World Trade Center
Site early on the Morning of September 11th. Five Bagpipe Procession
composed of members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY),
New York City Police Department (NYPD),
Port Authority Police Department (PAPD), New York City Correction
Department (NYDOC), New York
City Sanitation Department (DSNY),
and the New York Sate Court Officers (NYSCA), will march through New
York Streets from the farthest reaches of each of the five boroughs
and arrive at the World Trade Center site after 8:00 AM, to symbolize
the call to service that our uniformed officers made on September
11th, 2001.
"New Yorkers owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our uniform services," said Mayor Bloomberg. "This solemn procession represents a call to duty that saved so many, yet cost so much. The route will make its way through dozens of our City's neighborhoods and I invite all New Yorkers to line the route to demonstrate their support of our City's heroes."
Over 400 members of the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD and Court Officers died heroically on September 11th and along with the Corrections Officers and Sanitation Workers led the most successful evacuation and clean-up in history leading more than 25,000 people to safety.
