MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SWEARS IN KATE D. LEVIN AS COMMISSIONER OF DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today swore in Kate D. Levin as Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs. The Department of Cultural Affairs oversees, sustains, and promotes New York City's cultural life and its economic impact on the five boroughs, coordinating cultural policy for the City's approximately 1,400 art and cultural institutions and organizations. Mayor Bloomberg swore in Commissioner Levin at Gracie Mansion.

"I am proud to swear in Kate Levin as the next Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs," Mayor Bloomberg said. "The arts and other cultural entities are vital to New York City and make the City the cultural capital of the world. Kate Levin possesses the energy and expertise to lead this very important agency and I am confident that the arts in our City will flourish during her tenure."

"I am honored to serve my fellow New Yorkers at the Department of Cultural Affairs," Commissioner Levin said. "New York City is a global leader in the arts and cultural affairs and I intend to vigorously promote this community which is so important to the City's resurgence and overall well-being. I thank Mayor Bloomberg for the opportunity and look forward to working with him and the rest of the Administration in the coming years."

Prior to her appointment as Commissioner, Levin was an Assistant Professor of English and Theater at the City College of New York CUNY and Associate Director of the Simon H. Rifkind Center for Humanities and the Arts at CCNY. Levin received a BA from Harvard University and a PhD in English from the University of California at Berkeley.
