The first bill before me today is Introductory Number 877, sponsored by Council Members Provenzano, Abel and Golden. The bill would add the name "Ray Cilento Place" to Lydig Avenue, between Williamsbridge Road and Yates Avenue, in the Bronx.
Ray Cilento was born in the Belmont section of the Bronx on March l9, 1945. He attended local schools and went on to receive an Associate Degree in 1977 from Bronx Community College. During his entire career, Ray worked as an electrician, and he was an active member of the New York City Central Labor Council for 38 years. Although he never served as an elected union official, Ray Cilento committed his life to addressing the needs of working men and women.
Ray Cilento was also a community leader for many years. He served on the executive board of the Pelham Parkway Little League and, for a decade, he spent much of his spare time as a Little League manager and coach. In addition, he led the residents of his long-time home at 1144 Lydig Avenue as president of the Tenants' Association.
Sadly, Ray Cilento passed away on July 7, 2000.
Therefore, in recognition of his many years of service to his community and to the labor movement, it is fitting that Lydig Avenue, between Williamsbridge Road and Yates Avenue, be named "Ray Cilento Place."
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
