MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL RENAMING SECTION OF
CLAY AVENUE IN THE BRONX IN HONOR OF ANDREW ROBINSON

Remarks of Mayor Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The first bill before me today is Introductory Number 868, sponsored by Council Member Foster. The bill would add the name "Andrew Robinson Place" to Clay Avenue, between East 169th Street and East 170th Street, in the Bronx.

Andrew Robinson was born on September 21, 1916, in Columbia, South Carolina. In 1937, he moved to New York City, and was married two years later. For 33 years, until his retirement in 1986, Andrew worked in the livery business.

Andrew Robinson was a dedicated community activist for over 50 years. He became known in his neighborhood as the "Mayor of Claremont" for his leadership on projects such as tree plantings and other community beautification efforts, along with his work with the community safety patrol. He also served on Bronx Community Board No. 4 and he was the president and founder of the Claremont Homeowners and Tenants Civic Improvement Corporation from 1960 to the year 2000.

Unfortunately, Andrew Robinson passed away on July 11, 2000 at the age of 83.
Therefore, in view of his dedication and service to his community, it is fitting that Clay Avenue, between East 169th and East 170th Streets, be named "Andrew Robinson Place."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
