MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS MARCH RED CROSS MONTH IN NEW YORK CITY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed March 2001 Red Cross Month in New York City, as part of the organization's efforts to raise awareness of its programs and services. During the month of March hotels, airports and retail stores will fly the American Red Cross flag to show their support for the organization. The Mayor presented the proclamation to Jonathan O'Herron, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the American Red Cross in Greater New York.

"The Red Cross has been helping New Yorkers for decades," said Mayor Giuliani. "Their commitment to helping people is second to none and thousands of New Yorkers benefit from their efforts each year. I want to thank the thousands of individuals who volunteer their time each year and the American Red Cross for their assistance and compassion when New Yorkers need it most and I am proud to proclaim March Red Cross Month in New York City."

In 2000, the American Red Cross in Greater New York responded to 3,000 emergencies affecting more than 14,600 people and trained more than 107,300 New Yorkers in health and safety skills. In New York City, Red Cross workers are a fixture at fires and building collapses, relocating families and providing support to victims.

"The Red Cross is about saving lives," said Robert M. Bender, Jr., Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross in Greater New York. "We help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, we responded to more that 3,000 local disasters like Tropical Storm Floyd, the tragic loss of EgyptAir Flight 990, and the fatal building explosion in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. The backbone of the Red Cross is its more than 5,300 volunteers who are your family, friends and neighbors. During Red Cross Month, we invite Greater New Yorkers to learn about our humanitarian services and to join our community efforts by becoming a volunteer or financial supporter.".

The American Red Cross has celebrated March as Red Cross Month since 1943 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first presidential proclamation drawing attention to the organization's work. During Red Cross Month, hotels, airports and retail stores will fly the Red Cross flag, while supporters will work to raise awareness of the organization's programs and services. Volunteers will teach CPR and first aid and help transport New Yorkers to medical appointments. For more information about the Red Cross, visit their website at www.nyredcross.com.
