Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight hosted a reception at Gracie Mansion honoring the 22nd annual "New York is Book Country" (NYIB) Literary Festival. This year's festival includes over 125 activities Citywide, such as author talks, readings, workshops, panel discussions, and performances. NYIB Literary Festival events will culminate in the annual Fifth Avenue street fair on Sunday, September 24, which is expected to draw a quarter of a million people.
"More great books are published in New York City than anywhere else," Mayor Giuliani said. "That is tremendously important, not only because books are big business, but because they chronicle our culture and shape our world. This week we pay tribute to those who write, edit and publish great works of literature and non-fiction. In addition, we celebrate readers of all ages. Much of this year's 'New York is Book Country' festival will be dedicated to motivating young people to pick up books by bringing authors to read in many of our City's schools."
Joining the Mayor for the celebration were United Nations, Consular Corps and Protocol Commissioner Irene Halligan, The New York Times Vice President of Marketing Services Alyse Myers, RCA Vice President Lou Lenzi, and "New York is Book Country" President Linda Exman.
A not-for-profit corporation, "New York is Book Country" was founded in 1979 to celebrate books and communicate the joy of reading to adults and children throughout the City. The NYIB 2000 Festival will take place from September 20 - 24.
