MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS NEW YORK MARRIOTT MARQUIS DAY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today presented Marriott Marquis General Manager Michael J. Stengel with a proclamation declaring Tuesday, September 5th New York Marriott Marquis Day in recognition of the Hotel's 15th anniversary in Times Square.

"The New York Marriott Marquis is one of the premier hotels in New York City and it's a pleasure to present this proclamation," said Mayor Giuliani. "The Marquis has hosted millions of visitors over the past 15 years and has served as a catalyst for change in the Times Square area. It is one of the City's finest hotels and I look forward to the Marriott Marquis' continued success during the new millennium."

Groundbreaking on the 49-story, 1,946-room Marriott Marquis, located at 1535 Broadway, took place in 1982 and the building was completed three years later. As one of the largest hotels in New York City, the Marriott Marquis attracts visitors from around the world who marvel at the 37-story atrium and its 12 signature glass-enclosed elevators. The hotel is home to nine restaurants, including the City's only revolving rooftop restaurant. It has more than 100,000 square feet of meeting space, as well as the 1,600 seat Marquis Theater. The hotel has hosted numerous events, from the Daytime Emmy Awards to the NFL draft.

Since it opened in 1985 the Marquis front desk has registered more than 5,000,000 guests, the bell stand has handled more than 20,000,000 pieces of luggage, and room service has delivered more than 2,000,000 meals.
