Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, City Parks Commissioner Henry Stern, CowParade Holdings President Jerome Elbaum, and Phillips Auctioneers Contemporary Art Director Michael McGinnis today announced that the official CowParade New York 2000 Auction will be held Thursday, September 28, at Grand Central Terminal and Cipriani 42nd Street. CowParade New York involved 500 life-sized fiberglass cows, decorated and sculpted by artists, exhibited in every borough. Select cows will be offered for auction with proceeds benefiting six City charities - The City Parks Foundation; God's Love We Deliver; Hale House; Citymeals-on-Wheels; New Yorkers for Children, and The Center for Arts Education.
"CowParade New York 2000 has been a very unique and exciting
art event for all five boroughs," said Mayor Giuliani. "The 500 cows
that have grazed the City since June 15th have been a great spectacle for residents
and tourists alike. Now, I am happy to announce that the auction of the cows
will be held next month with the proceeds, expected to be in the millions, benefiting
six of the City's charities. The residents of the City will continue to benefit
from the Cows through the money raised from their auction. And the other cities
that have been inspired by the Cows' success here will soon reap the same rewards
that we have in New York."
"These cows have been well received by the public," said Commissioner
Stern. "In addition to their artistic beauty, the cows have the impeccable
pedigree of having graced New York City's parks and streets for the first summer
of the Millennium."
The Mayor was also joined at the announcement by "Taxi Cow" and "Don't Mooove, Eye See You" cow. This unique art initiative is hosted by NYC 2000, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and CowParade Holdings. CowParade began in 1998 in Zurich, Switzerland and then was imported to Chicago in 1999. CowParade New York 2000 is a community effort, involving local artists and charities, sponsors and the city residents and tourists who enjoy the exhibit.
