-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-
The next bill before me, Introductory Number 760, sponsored by Council Members Warden and Golden, would add the name Thomas E. Brown Avenue to Baychester Avenue, between East 233rd Street and Burke Avenue, in the Bronx.
Thomas E. Brown was born on August 20, 1921 in Atlanta, Georgia. At an early age he developed an extraordinary talent for the trombone, the foundation of his lifelong career in music.
During World War II he became one of the first black musicians to join the Navy. Following the war, Mr. Brown migrated to New York City and attended the Julliard School of Music. Mr. Brown went on to teach instrumental music at various schools in the City, and also became the conductor of the Bronx Borough-Wide Band. He was active in the community, spearheading cleanup campaigns, distributing food to the needy, and helping young people find summer jobs.
Unfortunately, Thomas E. Brown passed away on June 26, 1998.
In appreciation for all his community work, it is fitting that Baychester Avenue, between East 233rd Street and Burke Avenue, be named Thomas E. Brown Avenue.
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
