It will be interesting to see whether Mr. Hevesi, a Democrat, will be allowed to get away with his name-calling temper tantrum. It's certain that if the Mayor had said anything even a tenth as outrageous, it would be on the front page of the Times, and the subject of at least two editorials. Hevesi's overreaction certainly raises questions.
The Comptroller's decision not to pay 12 welfare-to-work vendors is against the law, as he himself admitted last week, and his reasons for the refusal are a complete sham. When pressed to explain his flip-flop, he cited a change in his "inclination."
The Mayor will swiftly obtain a court order to force Hevesi to obey the law. The real tragedy is that the people truly hurt by his illegal refusal to pay are the thousands of welfare recipients who need the services these contractors provide.
