Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws
The next bill before me is Introductory Number 558, sponsored by Council Members Fisher, Abel, Golden and Robles, which would add the name "Padre Pio Way" to North 8th Street between Meeker Avenue and Havemeyer Street in Brooklyn.
Padre Pio was born Francis Forgione on May 25, 1887 in Italy. In 1903, he joined the Franciscan Order and assumed the name of Padre Pio, which means "pious father" in English. On August 10, 1910, at the age of 23, Padre Pio was ordained a priest. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and anemia. In 1912, during one of his visits home to recuperate, it is widely believed he received the initial stigmata, which was Christ's sacred wounds imprinted on his hands, feet and side. On September 20, 1915, they occurred again and became permanent.
On September 23, 1968, soon after the celebration of the 50th anniversary of his stigmata, he passed away. His death was mourned all over the world, and it is estimated that over 100,000 people from all parts of the globe participated in his funeral.
On May 2, 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified Padre Pio, the last step prior to declaration of sainthood.
Therefore, it is fitting that North 8th Street between Meeker Avenue and Havemeyer Street, be named "Padre Pio Way."
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
