'Flock' Outdoors to Experience Art in the Open Air

May 5, 2014 - Now that New Yorkers have emerged from hibernation, there’s no better time to venture outdoors and discover extraordinary public art installations in parks and gardens throughout the five boroughs.

Various Artists | Flock
Art Students League

During a nine-month program, Flock was created by an international team of seven League students led by master sculptor Greg Wyatt. This sculpture is presented by the Model to Monument Program from the Art Students League of New York.

Karlis Rekevics | All-Too-Familiar Tangle
All-Too-Familiar Tangle references the wooden bollards that line the coast near the Staten Island Ferry, including the rounded portico and neo-classical limestone columns entryway of the landmarked Staten Island Savings Bank located at 81 Water Street.

Jade Chan | In Flight
The Rockaway Barrier Beautification Project is the longest mural in New York City, covering a 1.5 mile stretch of road along the beach in Rockaway, Queens. NYC Parks invited artists and designers to envision the surface of these ordinary barriers as canvases for art.

Nick Hornby | Bird God Drone
In Hornby’s Bird God Drone, the outline of Michelangelo’s David has been extruded vertically over 12 feet to converge at a single point.

The three structures in Rachel Feinstein’s Folly include a house perched on a towering cliff, a Rococo-style hut, and a flying ship moored high in a tree, supported by a mast extending to the ground, built with decorative rather than functional purpose.

Danh Vo | We the People
Public Art Fund

We the People is a full-scale copper replica of the statue in 250 individual parts fabricated over the course of four years using the original techniques and materials. The exhibition invites us to think anew about the contemporary meaning and relevance of familiar monuments like this one.
