Peregrine Falcons Caring For Four New Eggs At Downtown Manhattan Nest

Have a Chance to Name a Peregrine Falcon

Commissioner Christopher O. Ward of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection announced today that the City’s most famous pair of peregrine falcons are currently caring for four new eggs. Their nest is perched downtown on the 14th floor of 55 Water Street, overlooking New York Harbor.

The falcons and the nest can be seen on live video at www.nyc.gov/dep and at www.55water.com. The 55 Water Street site also includes a falcon diary, updated periodically by building staff.

In a contest being run by the management of 55 Water Street, visitors to www.55water.com are being asked to send emails suggesting a name for the female falcon. The male falcon is known as Jack, and has been nesting in the spot for many years.

“A wildlife biologist from DEP, Christopher Nadareski, has been monitoring these particular birds for years and will continue to check on them as they nurse and raise their new batch of young,” said Commissioner Ward. “The return of peregrine falcons to New York Harbor is another indicator that environmental conditions are improving and that our hard work and investments are paying off.”

“We’ll continue to monitor the eggs in anticipation of the day they hatch and the young birds eventually leave the nest,” Commissioner Ward said. “I’m sure many New Yorkers will enjoy tracking their progress on the Web.”
