The Plant
The Owls Head plant was built on filled land along the edge of New York Harbor in the vicinity of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The portion of the City that the plant serves includes Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Bensonhurst, Borough Park, Prospect Park and the Flatbush section of Brooklyn.

The History

The City of New York completed the original Owls Head Plant in 1952. Originally, the plant was designed to remove 80%26#37; of the suspended solids and 75%26#37; of the biological oxygen demand (BOD) from an average wastewater flow of 160 MGD. Upgrading of the Owls Head WPCP was completed in 1995 in order to comply with the federal requirements for secondary treatment and discharge of wastewater at publicly-owned treatment plants.
