The Plant
The Oakwood Beach plant serves the southern section of Staten Island.

The History

The original Oakwood Beach Water Pollution Control Plant was designed in the mid 1950's. It replaced two old screening plants that were located at Cromwell Avenue and at Oakwood Beach. The plant was designed to serve an ultimate 1980 population of 60,000 people and a flow of 15 MGD. The rapid development of Staten Island caused these design parameters to be reached by 1965. In 1969, contract drawings for a major upgrade and expansion of Oakwood Beach was prepared. This upgrade provided for increasing plant capacity to 40 MGD.
