The Plant
Hunts Point is located in the Hunts Point Section of the Bronx. The tributary area of 16,664 acres includes the central and eastern portions of the Bronx.
The Hunts Point Plant was planned in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s as part of the pollution control program for the Bronx. The Project Report, dated September 1943, recommended an initial project with a capacity of 120 MGD with subsequent increase to 150 MGD. The design of the plant was completed in 1949 and construction began shortly thereafter. The plant went into operation in 1952. In 1959, planning was undertaken for expansion of the plant capacity to 150 MGD. The report, plans and specifications were completed in 1961. Construction of the plant extensions were undertaken shortly thereafter and completed in 1962. The plant was upgraded in 1964 to provide secondary treatment by the step aeration process for a design flow of 150 MGD. In 1975 it was upgraded to 200 MGD. The plant is currently undergoing an upgrade to bilogical nutrient reduction systems.
