Regional Planning
The NYC region is home to more than 23 million people. NYC Planning works with our neighbors to ensure the metro region's shared assets continue to support everyone who lives and works here.

Overview

New York City draws strength not only from its own residents but those across the wider metropolitan region. 23.5 million people live across the 31 counties of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut that make up our metro region. With 10.4 million jobs, the metro region's economy accounts for nearly 10% of United States gross domestic product.

NYC Planning recognizes that our regional relationships are essential to achieving job growth and fair housing goals, and we collaborate with partners across the metro region to help ensure that its shared assets support all who live and work here. The agency seeks to:

  • Analyze regional population, economic and land use trends
  • Connect with governments and planners across the region
  • Instill regionalism in NYC planning activities
