Happy Thursday, New Yorkers!
Labor Day is almost here, and I know many of you are looking forward to the three-day weekend to spend with friends, family, and community. We can thank America’s labor movement for this day of relaxation, which began as a celebration of what unions and the power of organizing has achieved for workers across the country – like the 40-hour work week. More thoughts on this day here.
With this opportunity to recharge coming up quickly, I wanted to give you fast run-down of the week at City Hall to keep you in the loop and some fun free activities you can enjoy over the weekend. This is how we Got Stuff Done for you and your neighbors this week: |

↳ Three initiatives to know: |
|
|
-
Parks and Rec – Two Staten Island parks got major upgrades this week with newly constructed bathrooms, bocce ball courts, benches, and a plaza at Fairview Park and improvement projects beginning at Greenbelt Recreation Center. With Staten Island’s parks seeing more visitors, now those visitors will see more enhancements and amenities.
-
Getting Stuff Built – Our incredible City workers have done it again with another public space project completed well ahead of schedule and under budget! Brooklynites can now easily bike from Canarsie to the Gateway National Recreation Area, Jamaica Bay, and the Rockaways with the construction of a bike lane linking the networks in those areas. The neighborhood also got better ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps and some new trees.
-
Embracing the freedom to worship – For too long, red tape has prevented our Muslim community from amplifying their calls to prayer. Now, NYPD legal guidance has been clarified to ensure mosques and masjids can call their communities to prayer over speakers or public address systems on Fridays between 12:30pm-1:30pm and during the holy month of Ramadan without needing a special permit.

Before you go, did you know… |
|
|
You can bike all the way to Canada directly from the Bronx’s Van Cortlandt Park? The Empire State Trail, which connects to the park, will take you 360 miles north to the Canadian border in around 32 hours. Biking to Montreal from the border adds just five and a half more hours to the (literally) cross-country trip. 🚵♀️💨💨 |
