Good evening New Yorkers,
Earlier this week, four innocent New Yorkers were stolen from us in a tragic act of gun violence in Midtown Manhattan, including one of New York’s Finest, NYPD Detective Didarul Islam. Detective Islam represented the best of New York City, an immigrant from Bangladesh who bravely put on a uniform every day to protect and serve us all. I’ve also heard amazing stories about Wesley LePatner, Aland Etienne, and Julia Hyman and all they meant to their families, their friends, and their communities. It’s unthinkable that each of these innocent people were taken from us like this. They and their loved ones are in our hearts.
In moments like this, remember: your city has your back and you are not alone. If you need, please utilize these free, confidential mental health resources.
Moments like this also remind us of the extraordinary work our city’s public servants do every day. From the first responders who bravely run into dangerous situations, to the social workers who dedicate their days to serving New York’s most vulnerable residents, to the public servants who get up before dawn to keep our streets clean, their efforts are at the heart of our city. I cannot thank them enough.
Even through the most difficult times, those efforts to deliver for New Yorkers continue. This week, we advanced landmark initiatives to deliver more housing for New Yorkers as part of our planned “Housing Week.” We announced that we shattered affordable housing records for the third fiscal year in a row: we produced a record number of affordable rentals, set back-to-back records for creating affordable housing for previously homeless New Yorkers, got the most number of New Yorkers into affordable homes through the city’s housing lottery, and so much more. These efforts have all contributed to our administration creating, preserving, or planning approximately 426,800 homes to date.
Here’s how we’re creating even more homes, connecting even more New Yorkers to homes, and keeping even more of our neighbors in the homes they already have:
