Good evening New Yorkers, Before getting into this week’s updates, I want to acknowledge the extraordinary bravery of our New York City police officers who work every day to keep us and our loved ones safe.
On Monday morning, two of New York’s Finest were shot while patrolling the 115th precinct in Queens. These two officers met danger with courage and put their lives on the line to keep our city safe. We are relieved that both officers are expected to make a full recovery and the suspect was immediately apprehended.
I wish these two officers and their families the best as they recover, and I know our city stands with them during this time. Keeping New Yorkers safe, rebuilding our economy, and creating a more livable city is our mission every single week. Here's how we delivered for you this past week: |

Expanding access to public restrooms – We launched our “Ur In” Luck initiative to help New Yorkers locate and use our city’s nearly 1,000 public restrooms. Not only did we build an interactive Google Maps layer to help you find the nearest public restroom, but we’re also building 46 new restrooms and renovating 36 existing ones to improve accessibility and energy efficiency.
Making summer streets safer for all – We announced enhanced efforts to get illegal mopeds and scooters off our city streets as the weather heats up and use of these vehicles becomes more common. These vehicles endanger pedestrians when driven recklessly, and we’ve seen an exponential uptick in criminals riding them to quickly steal property from New Yorkers. No one is above the law, and people riding an illegal vehicle will face the consequences.
-
Investing in our children’s future – We’re supporting our young people by investing critical city dollars in programs that promote computer science, civics, restorative justice, and Summer Rising. With the $127 million in investments we announced this week, we will protect long-term programs that had previously only been funded with temporary stimulus dollars and give our young people a chance to learn and grow.

Find a session near you, and check back regularly for updates.
This summer, we’re helping New Yorkers beat the heat by proactively preparing for the days it’s too hot out by opening 24/7 air-conditioned places to go, increased heat education, and “cool kits” for our most vulnerable New Yorkers. You can always reference our comprehensive “Beat the Heat” guide to stay safe and stay healthy on our hottest days.

...a trio of rare bears were born in Queens? The Queens Zoo recently welcomed three baby Andean bears, which typically are only born one or two at a time. Classified as a “vulnerable” species, fewer than 18,000 Andean bears are currently in the wild. In North America, we only have 33 of these bears. Breeding programs, like the one at the Queens Zoo, are in place to support this crucial population.
Now that our city’s three new cubs are ready to meet you (from a safe distance), plan your trip to the Queens Zoo today.
