Good evening New York,
I hope you had a fantastic weekend, whether you put on radiant rainbow colors for the NYC Pride March or explored all our incredible city has to offer – like visiting Manhattan’s new elevated wooden walking bridge. Throughout the week, we also Got Stuff Done for you at City Hall, such as... |

↳ Four initiatives to know:
-
Kicking careers into gear – We're empowering high school students to gain experience in emerging fields like tech and health care. Students in more than 100 NYC public schools will soon gain access to paid work experiences, mentoring, and early college credit from CUNY. By partnering with companies like Google, we’re diversifying the future of the tech industry and giving our students invaluable opportunities.
-
Consistence in free roadside assistance – We unveiled our Highway Emergency Local Patrol (H.E.L.P.) to provide no-cost emergency services to Staten Island motorists. This free resource will help New Yorkers in distress receive speedy assistance, and it will clear up congestion resulting from these roadway incidents.
-
New Buildings for NYCHA Living – Tenants in two NYCHA buildings voted to demolish their deteriorating buildings in favor of building new and improved high-rises for the residents currently living there. Due to the present conditions, it was cheaper and more efficient to start from scratch. In these new buildings, residents will get amenities such as in-unit temperature control, dishwashers, and laundry.
-
Keeping spirits high with breathing exercise – From pre-K to senior year, NYC Public Schools will soon facilitate daily mindful breathing exercises for students. In a society of swirling stress, toxic social media, and negative news flashes, our students deserve a moment of peace. We’re the first public school system nationally to have a Yoga Alliance-approved yoga and mindfulness program, and we know it’s going to significantly benefit our young New Yorkers.

Subway Surfing kills – From 2021 to 2022, there was a 336% increase in people recklessly riding our subways outside of the train. This fad is deadly and is taking the lives of too many New Yorkers. Just last week we lost a 14-year-old in Brooklyn, who fatally fell off the subway while riding on top. |
In response, we’re working with our Youth Coordination Officers and Neighborhood Coordination officers to discuss the devastating consequences with young people who engage in this activity. I also called on social media platforms like TikTok to improve content moderation and immediately remove all harmful content featuring Subway Surfing. |
NYC’s First Jewish Advisory Council – New York City is home to the largest Jewish community in the world outside of Israel, so we formed our city’s first advisory council for the community to voice concerns and discuss issues impacting quality of life. The 37 members will be from all five boroughs and includes rabbis, nonprofit leaders, and community-based organization leaders.
Central Park Boathouse – For another summer of fun, snacks, and rowing, the Central Park Loeb Boathouse officially reopened! With an 80-seat patio, lobster rolls, and boat rentals, you can have the best lakeside summer day without ever leaving the heart of Manhattan. |
Public questions for public safety – New Yorkers like you can submit questions for the weekly Friday public safety briefing here. Our leaders will answer these during the Friday livestream, available on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

☞ Of note: The Intrepid’s Free Fridays are back! This week, you can explore the ship then watch an outdoor screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl atop the iconic World War II era aircraft carrier for free.

⚽️ Free outdoor summer sports |
For New Yorkers of all ages, the City Parks Foundation is bringing sports programming to a park near you! They’re providing free instruction, coaching, and equipment so New Yorkers can stay active and have fun with people in their communities. The sports offered include golf, track and field, soccer, and even obstacle course races.

🚲 Biking and boosting business on Broadway |
| |
New pedestrian plazas, shared streets, and two-way bike connections came to Broadway this week. From W. 25th Street to W. 32nd Street, you can now enjoy a walkable, bikeable, and enjoyable time on Broadway. Not only do these improvements contribute to a more vibrant area, but it also benefits our local businesses! |
The Department of Transportation was awarded a $6 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration to rehabilitate ten Bronx bus stops along Jerome Avenue. This will directly improve safety and service, and riders will experience shorter wait times for the bus. |

🪔 Celebrating Diwali (and diversity!) |
Starting this upcoming school year, NYC Public Schools now recognizes Diwali as an official holiday! This pan-religious celebration of light over darkness is a significant part of South Asian and Indo-Caribbean culture, and I am proud that the State Assembly and the State Senate passed a bill to get this important holiday on the school calendar. I know it's a few months early to say this, but Shubh Diwali!

Large dogs and adult cats can be adopted all summer long with a special $5 fee at our Animal Care Centers of NYC! As the city’s only municipal shelter, NYC ACC is experiencing an influx of abandoned pets and need our help to prevent overcrowding. You can browse all available pets here. If you’re unable to commit to creating a fur-ever home this summer, please consider fostering a dog or cat!
