Good evening New York City,
I hope you and your family had a great weekend. I joined our neighbors across the boroughs to celebrate our city’s vibrant diversity. Some highlights included standing with Black Staten Islanders at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden’s Juneteenth celebration, meeting with LGBTQ+ Bronxites for Pride Month festivities, and marching through downtown Brooklyn with Man Up Inc., which brings together Black and Brown fathers in solidarity every Father’s Day. Here’s how we’ve Gotten Stuff Done for you at City Hall this week: |
-
With 1 in 10 people over the age of 60 suffering from abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation, we’re putting an older adult liaison in every police precinct. They will support and educate older New Yorkers to keep them safe and informed.
-
50 murals are coming to NYC to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop! The musical genre first born in the South Bronx has given voice to the voiceless for decades, and we’re excited to bring paint and pride to 50 communities starting this July.
- We’re helping more New Yorkers in need get permanent housing by eliminating the CityFHEPS program’s 90-day shelter stay requirement, cutting red tape, and expanding eligibility.
-
There’s still time to get your free air conditioner or fan! Whether you have an outdated unit or no unit at all, you deserve to stay cool this summer. We’re offering up to $1,000 in benefits for qualified New Yorkers so please check your eligibility before it gets too hot.

🏖️ 🌅 Summer’s starting 🌅 🏖️ |
With summer officially here, let’s get into the new City initiatives you should know and can't-miss happenings around the boroughs this week. |
↳ Three initiatives to know: |
-
Asylum Application Help Center – We are set to help thousands of asylum seekers in NYC navigate the asylum application process, which will bring them closer to being eligible for work authorizations or permanent asylum. These are critical steps in helping asylum seekers start stable lives for them and their families. We're accepting a wide range of applications including attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, and more. Please apply here ASAP.
-
Preventing lithium-ion battery fires – After another heartbreaking tragedy caused by e-bike batteries, we announced a multi-agency plan to speed up investigations into hazardous conditions involving lithium-ion batteries at bike and bike repair shops. If you see these dangerous conditions, such as large numbers of batteries being charged together or mazes of extension cords, please call 311 immediately. Also, please take some time to read through these FDNY-approved safety tips for devices with lithium-ion batteries.
-
Saturday Night Lights – Back for another year, the Saturday Night Lights program has brought free fitness, sports, and fun to youth in underserved neighborhoods during traditionally high-crime times on Saturday nights. There are 136 participating locations this year across all five boroughs.
|
Your free ticket to NYC – Sign up for Culture Pass to visit 80+ cultural institutions for free. With a $0.00 price tag (yes, truly free!), perhaps you will take a spiraling stroll around the Guggenheim, an auditory adventure at The Shed, or a rustic roam through Historic Richmond Town. |
↳ Infrastructure investment: |
Forgotten no more – "The Hole” went ignored for decades and residents in the Brooklyn-Queens border neighborhood were left to deal with the consequences. We’re putting $75 million towards truly affordable housing and updated infrastructure so Jewel Streets residents no longer have to handle poor conditions, excessive flooding, and sewage conditions on their own.
|
Public questions for public safety – New Yorkers like you can submit questions for the weekly Friday public safety briefing here. Our leaders will answer these during the Friday livestream, available on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.
|
↳ FREE events this weekend: |
☞ Of note: The annual NYC Pride March is here! Starting at 12pm on Sunday (6/25), LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, community organizations, and allies will march through Manhattan during this historic yearly demonstration. |
The Wave Street Mural Project on Staten Island is looking for volunteers this Saturday (6/24)! At any skill level, participants ages 9 and up will bring beautiful brightness to the area with this community mural project. There will be teaching artists at the site to help you throughout the day. Sign up here!

🔋 Where wastewater becomes energy |
Your leftover banana peel might just power your home soon. Greenpoint’s Newtown Creek Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) will convert your organic waste into renewable energy. Not only will this be able to heat 5,200 homes, but it will also improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and divert organic waste from our landfills.
|
🌊 Storm resilient streets |
A pilot program on Staten Island is teaching elementary students about ticks. With hands-on learning and visualizations, students learn how to spot ticks, how to assess different types of ticks, and how to protect themselves.
If you’re looking for ways to stay safe from ticks, here’s a helpful guide from NYC Health with everything you need to know. |
Before you go, did you know… |
We have nearly 24,700 trash cans in New York City? If you want to see just how many that really is, check out this interactive map of every single litter basket inventoried by the Department of Sanitation. You can even see what kinds of garbage bins are in your area when you explore a specific datapoint. 🚮 🚮 🚮 |
I hope you have a wonderful weekend, New York City! Let’s have the best New York summer yet. Your Mayor, Eric P.S. Have a question, comment, or request? Contact my office here. I look forward to hearing from you. |
