Good evening New York City,
I hope you had a great warm weather weekend and a fantastic Mother’s Day. I enjoyed meeting community leaders across the city, marching in the Japan Parade alongside our Japanese community, and gearing up for another week of serving our city. This week we’ve been Getting Stuff Done for you at City Hall, such as: |
-
Giving $391 in food benefits to all NYC public school families, regardless of financial status. If you have a child in public school, expect benefit distribution now through September.
-
Extending our 1000th job offer at our Staten Island Hiring Hall! This was our eighth event of the year, and we’re excited to keep connecting talented New Yorkers with City jobs.
-
Reminding New Yorkers about Culture Pass, a free program to visit 80+ cultural institutions and museums for no charge. It's a must-have NYC summer accessory!
-
Completing a major Maspeth infrastructure project a year early AND 44% below budget. The water mains are now upgraded so residents are less vulnerable to leaks and floods.
|
🗽💰 About that $5,000,000... 💰🗽 |
From unveiling new public spaces to requesting YOUR opinions on how to spend $5,000,000 of City money (more on this below), there’s a lot going on this week. That's why I rounded up exactly what you should know. |
↳ Three initiatives to know: |
-
The People’s Money – New Yorkers, we want to hear from YOU about how to spend $5,000,000 towards improving New York City! Available to all NYC residents, ages 11 and older, we’re proud to promote NYC’s participatory budgeting process. What does that mean? You can vote for projects you’d like to see these funds go towards, and the projects receiving the most support will win funding. Make your voice heard by voting online any time today through June 25. In-person voting is also available at these locations. I’m counting on your participation, New York – let’s get these funds to the right places!
-
From seniors to skaters – We’re reopening “The Arches” below the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan after they were closed for a decade. This one-acre plot of public space in Chinatown is a beloved haven for all, and it’ll once again be open to the public to enjoy strolling, sitting, skateboarding, sports, and shuffleboard.
-
Changing history’s course – The second round of public engagement sessions to reimagine the Cross Bronx Expressway is underway. We want to hear your ideas for lifting the burden this infrastructure has imposed on the community for decades in terms of health impact, mobility, pollution, and noise. Find an engagement event online or near you here.
|
The need to read – We’re making a historic shift in our curriculum to teach students how to read intuitively and how to love what they’re reading.
This is personal for me – I struggled with dyslexia throughout school and would pray every day my teacher wouldn’t call on me. We need to set our young New Yorkers up for success. We want them to want to get called on in class. Universal literacy is a huge part of that. |
Public questions for public safety – New Yorkers like you can submit questions for the weekly Friday public safety briefing here. Our leaders will answer these during the Friday livestream, available on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.
|
↳ FREE events this weekend: |
-
Bronx: spend an afternoon painting your Bronx pride
-
Brooklyn: enjoy films in the 5th Annual Public School Film Festival
-
Manhattan: learn how to tango dance in the park
-
Queens: celebrate AAPI Heritage Month with a themed silent disco
-
Staten Island: listen to a talk on becoming your own superhero
|
☞ Of note: The Coney Island Boardwalk is celebrating its 100th birthday! For a whole century, friends and families have made unforgettable memories on the beach and boardwalk. The weather is perfect to get yourself there for a day of fun in the sun. |
We’re expanding Open Streets to Bushwick, Brownsville, and beyond. Not only do Open Streets boost people’s mood with the extra space, but they are proven to benefit local businesses! |
The New York Hall of Science debuted a citywide augmented reality Snapchat Lens to explain the science behind New York infrastructure, like fire hydrants, reflective stop signs, and traffic lights. When you discover six or more objects through the Lens, you’ll receive a free museum ticket to visit the New York Hall of Science!
|
New York City is the only place in the world where you can turn a dream into a small business and evolve it into a national phenomenon. That’s the story of Tacombi, whose founder I spoke to on this week’s Get Stuff Done-cast episode. Listen as founder Dario Wolos and I discuss his journey to New York and how a VW bus played an integral role in eventually taking a beachside taqueria in Mexico to the shelves of Whole Foods.
|
Before you go, did you know… |
The Governors Island sheep are baaaack! Helping again with lawn maintenance this summer, I highly recommend ewe follow the herd out there to see them in action as they snack on plant species that are bad for the island but good for the sheep. There is no way to be in a baaaaad mood around an adorable heap of sheep – Evening, Chad, Bowie, Jupiter and Philip Aries will shear you up without fail. They’re amazing and a-grazing! 🐑 🐑 🐑 |
Hope you have a great weekend, New York! Don't forget to cast your vote for how we should spend $5,000,000 with The People’s Money initiative. We want to make sure it goes to where you and your community need it the most. Your Mayor, Eric P.S. Please remember you can directly send me a question through this form. I look forward to hearing from you. |
