Good evening New Yorkers,
I began this week in the Dominican Republic with members of our administration as we continue to mourn the at least 231 people who we lost to a tragic roof collapse at a nightclub in Santo Domingo last week.
The heartbreaking disaster claimed so many innocent lives, and we feel the pain of their loss both here at home and abroad. Our Dominican New Yorkers aren’t merely my residents, but my family. And when my family was hurting, I knew we needed to be there alongside our grieving brothers and sisters and the brave first responders who jumped right into action. Here’s a recap of this incredibly meaningful visit.
Back in the five boroughs, we continued to deliver a safer and more affordable city for you this past week. Here’s how: |
- Making historic investments in kids’ education – We made a historic $167 million investment into early childhood education for our littlest New Yorkers. These funds will now be a permanent part of our city’s budget and deliver on long-term commitments, including funding 3-K citywide, expanding pre-K for students with special needs, helping younger kids in need access Head Start programming, and more. These investments truly embody how we are making our city the best place to raise a family.
- Removing unsightly scaffolding – We were proud to sign multiple pieces of legislation that tackle our city’s long-standing scaffolding and sidewalk shed epidemic. Many of these much-needed City Council reforms were first proposed by our administration in 2023, as part of our “Get Sheds Down” plan. By the end of 2024, we’d taken down 173 miles of scaffolding, and these reforms will only make it easier to continue removing unsightly scaffolding from our streets, making them safer, more vibrant, and providing more space for pedestrians and small businesses.
- Supporting New York City’s workforce – We achieved another milestone this week to ensure our city workers are fairly compensated for the safer, more affordable city they are creating for New Yorkers every day. We have now successfully negotiated contracts with unions representing 98.56 percent of the more than 300,000 members of the city's workforce, and 100 percent of the city’s uniformed workforce. We kept our promise to the men and women who are taking guns off our streets and producing historic reductions in crime.

↳ Three things to know this week:
- The Charter Revision Commission is evaluating how we can make NYC’s government more responsive and transparent, especially when it comes to promoting fair housing. They’re incorporating feedback from New Yorkers like you, and their next public input session is on Wednesday, April 23 — attend in-person in Manhattan or online.
- Our Cooling Assistance program application is open for New Yorkers to apply for FREE air conditioners and fans! Staying cool in the summer shouldn’t be a luxury, and this benefit helps more New Yorkers affordably cool off during our hot months. Check your eligibility today!
- Coney Island’s iconic attractions are open for the season! Both Deno’s Wonder Wheel and Luna Park are again welcoming visitors to make lifelong memories at America’s playground. Whether you want to test your aim with boardwalk games or ride a nearly 125-year-old swinging Ferris wheel, there’s something for everyone at this classic NYC summer spot.
